Light in the Middle of the Chaos

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. — Philippians 2:15

Not long ago, I found myself reflecting on my years as a paramedic.

One night in particular came to mind. A dark country road. A vehicle accident. As we arrived on the scene, the chaos was immediate. People involved in the accident were fighting with one another, anger spilling out into the darkness. Lights were flashing. Sirens were cutting through the night air. Voices were raised. Everything around me was in disorder and confusion.

And in the middle of all of it, there was a person trapped in a vehicle who needed help.

The chaos did not change my assignment. The anger around me did not alter my purpose. The noise and the confusion and the disorder were all real, but none of it was my focus. My job was to reach the person who needed saving. And that is exactly what we did.

In Philippians 2:15, Paul writes to believers, calling them to shine as lights in the world. But he does not describe a peaceful, quiet world waiting to receive that light. He describes a crooked and perverse nation. A world that is not neutral toward God’s people. A culture that is, in many ways, in active disorder. And it is precisely in the middle of that world that believers are called to shine.

Not around it. Not from a safe distance. In the midst of it.

It would be easy to look at the state of the world today and feel overwhelmed. The anger is real. The confusion is loud. The darkness in our culture is not subtle. And sometimes the temptation is to retreat, to withdraw from the noise and wait for things to settle before we engage.

But that is not the call.

Just as the chaos on that country road did not change what I was there to do, the chaos of our culture does not change what we are here to do. We are placed in this world, in this moment, in this particular moment of history, for a reason. And our assignment is not to match the noise around us or be consumed by the confusion. It is to shine. Steadily. Purposefully. In the middle of it all.

The world does not need believers who only shine when conditions are favorable. It needs men and women who remain blameless and harmless and focused on their purpose, even when everything around them is in disorder.

Someone near you is trapped in the chaos. Your light may be exactly what leads them out.
