Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. — Psalm 23:4
There have been a few times in my life that I thought would never end.
Circumstances and challenges that seemed impossible to get through. Valleys that lingered on and on with no end in sight. Seasons where the darkness felt less like something passing through and more like something settling in permanently. If you have lived long enough, you know exactly what that feels like.
The valley is a real place.
David does not pretend otherwise. He does not skip over the hard seasons or offer a tidy reassurance that life will always be bright and manageable. He walks straight into the valley of the shadow of death and names it for what it is. Dark. Shadowed. The kind of place that produces fear in even the most faithful heart.
But then he says something that changes everything.
I will fear no evil.
Not because the valley is not real. Not because the shadow is not dark. But because of what he knows about who is walking with him. For thou art with me. The presence of God in the valley does not eliminate the darkness. It accompanies us through it. And that distinction matters more than we often realize.
We sometimes pray for God to remove the valley entirely. To lift us out of the hard season before we have to walk through it. And sometimes He does. But more often, the promise is not removal — it is presence. He goes with us into the places we would never choose to enter on our own.
There is also something significant in the word through that is easy to read past.
David does not say he will walk into the valley and remain there. He does not describe the valley as a destination. It is a passage. A season with an entrance and an exit. The darkness is real but it is not permanent. The shadow is deep but it has an end. Whatever valley you are in right now was never meant to be your final address.
The rod and the staff David mentions are the tools of a shepherd. The rod for protection. The staff for guidance. Together they represent a shepherd who knows exactly where he is going even when the sheep cannot see the path. The comfort they offer is not the comfort of easy circumstances. It is the comfort of trusted leadership in an unfamiliar place.
God knows the way through your valley. He has walked it before you. And He is not leading you deeper into the darkness — He is leading you through it toward the other side.
If you are in a season today that feels like it has no end, take heart. The valley is real. The shadow is real. But so is the Shepherd walking beside you. And He does not lead His sheep to places they cannot come back from.
You are not stuck. You are walking through.
