Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day. — Deuteronomy 8:11
There are many moments in my life that have left a lasting impression. For example, the day that I gave my life to Christ forever changed me. The day that I married my wife changed the course of my life. But there are also many days that left a lasting impression that were not so great: days of struggle, moments of need, and even times when I knew I had sinned.
Those difficult moments have a way of staying with us. They remind us of our dependence on God. They draw us to prayer. They cause us to seek Him more intentionally.
But there is another kind of season that does not always leave the same impression — the season when things are going well.
In Deuteronomy 8, God was preparing His people to enter into a land of blessing. They would have provision, stability, and abundance. Yet in the middle of that promise, God gives a warning: “Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God.”
Forgetting God is rarely a sudden decision. It is usually a gradual drift.
When life is difficult, we tend to cling closely to God. But when life becomes comfortable, that same urgency can begin to fade. The prayers may become less frequent. The awareness may grow dull. The dependence that once felt necessary can slowly be replaced with routine.
We do not often think of blessing as a danger, but it can be.
Not because blessing is wrong, but because it can quietly lead us to rely on what we have instead of the One who provided it. Gratitude can turn into expectation. Awareness can turn into assumption. That is why the warning is so important: Beware.
Pay attention to your heart. Guard against drift. Continue remembering the Lord — not only in hardship, but in abundance.
The goal is not to live in constant struggle, but to remain in constant awareness. The same God who met you in your lowest moments is the One who must remain central in your best ones.
If life feels stable right now, pause and remember. Do not allow comfort to create distance. Have seasons of comfort caused you to become less aware of your need for God?
