And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? — Luke 6:46
Some things just come naturally. After many years of driving a car, we get comfortable and seemingly go on autopilot. Many daily tasks become routine after completing them day after day. These types of tasks require very little thought or attention.
What once required focus becomes automatic. The same thing can happen in our spiritual lives.
We can pray familiar prayers without thinking. Read Scripture without reflecting. Attend church, serve, and participate — all while our hearts are only partially engaged. The habits remain, but the attention begins to fade. Faith becomes something we do rather than something we live.
This is the danger of mechanical faith.
Jesus asks a direct question: “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” His concern is not with activity alone, but with the condition of the heart. It is possible to say the right things, do the right things, and still be disconnected where it matters most.
Mechanical faith is subtle. It does not look like rebellion. It often looks like consistency. But over time, routine can replace relationship. We can continue moving in the right direction externally while drifting internally.
God does not desire our habits apart from our hearts. He invites us into something deeper — a living relationship marked by attention, response, and sincerity.
If your walk with God has begun to feel routine, pause for a moment. Not to do more, but to become aware again. Slow down. Listen. Engage. Let your faith be more than repetition. Faith was never meant to run on autopilot.
Where might your spiritual life be running on habit rather than an intentional relationship?
