Still Making A Difference

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. — Matthew 5:13

I remember watching the retirement of an athlete many years ago. As they spoke, they reflected on their career and how much they had loved the game. But one statement in particular stood out above everything else they said that day. They looked out at the crowd and said they knew it was time to retire because they were no longer making a difference in the game like they once did.

That statement stayed with me.

There was something remarkably honest about it. It was not about age or injury or statistics. It was about impact. When the influence was gone, they recognized it was time. The contribution that had once defined their presence was no longer what it used to be.

Jesus uses a similar kind of thinking when He calls His followers the salt of the earth.

Salt is not impressive on its own. It is small, ordinary, and easy to overlook. But its influence is undeniable. Salt preserves what would otherwise decay. It brings out flavor that would otherwise go unnoticed. It changes everything it comes into contact with, not by being loud or demanding attention, but simply by being what it is and doing what it was made to do.

But Jesus adds a warning that is easy to read past. Salt can lose its savour. It can become ineffective. And when it does, He says plainly, it is good for nothing.

That is a sobering thought for the believer.

It is possible to still look like salt, to carry the name, attend the gatherings, speak the language, while no longer having any real influence on the world around us. When we blend in completely with the culture, when our lives are indistinguishable from those who do not know God, when our presence in a room changes nothing and our absence would go unnoticed, something has been lost.

The question is not whether we once made a difference. The question is whether we still are.

Unlike an athlete whose physical abilities naturally diminish with time, a believer never has to lose their savour. The influence of a Spirit-filled life does not have an expiration date. But it does require intentionality. It requires staying close to God, remaining rooted in His Word, and being willing to stand out in a world that would prefer we simply blend in.

Where you live, where you work, where you spend your time, those places need salt. They need the preserving, flavoring, quietly transforming influence of a life genuinely surrendered to God.

Are you still making a difference? Not for the applause of anyone watching, but because that is exactly what you were placed there to do.
