Anchor for the Soul

“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the vail;” — Hebrews 6:19

Many things in life are uncertain. We may not know what this day or even tomorrow holds. We don’t always know how things will end up with our jobs, school, or many other things we face. We hope for the best, but never know what is going to happen.

That uncertainty can sit on our hearts like a weight. We feel like a boat with no one at the helm. Scripture offers us something firmer than a wish.

When we say “I hope so” in everyday speech, we usually mean “maybe.” But the hope in Hebrews is of a different kind. It’s described as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.

Biblical hope is confidence anchored in a person, not in outcomes. It is settled because the One it’s fastened to never changes.

An anchor doesn’t calm the sea. It doesn’t remove the waves or stop the wind. It keeps the boat from drifting. God doesn’t always take the storm away. But He holds us through it. Our circumstances may shake while our souls remain secure.

The verse says this hope enters into that within the veil. Our anchor is not set in anything on this earth. It is fixed in the very presence of God, where Christ our Savior has gone before us. What He has secured, no storm can pull loose.

What are you holding on to today? A job, a plan, a result you’re hoping for? Those are good things to pray about, but they were never meant to be an anchor.

Let go of the need to know how everything will turn out, and fasten your soul to Christ. You may not know what tomorrow holds. You can know who holds tomorrow.
