“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
As a paramedic, I took care of people facing critical, life-threatening trauma or medical conditions. In those moments, the job was clear. Assess, treat, transport. But not every call looked like that. Sometimes a person was simply facing some difficult days. It wasn’t so much that they needed the care I could provide. They needed the comfort that things would be okay.
I couldn’t fix everything on those calls. What I could do was show up, stay close, and let them know they weren’t alone. And I learned something: sometimes presence is the treatment. I think that’s exactly what this verse is about.
Notice the word nigh. It means near. Scripture doesn’t say the LORD is near to those who have it all together, or to those who have found the right words to pray. It says He is near to those of a broken heart.
Many of us assume that when life falls apart, God steps back until we get ourselves in order. This verse says the opposite. The broken heart doesn’t push Him away. It draws Him close.
Notice also what the verse leaves out. It doesn’t promise an explanation or that the pain will be gone by morning. It promises His nearness. Sometimes we pray for answers when what we need most is Him. The answer may come in time. His presence is already here.
The verse also mentions a contrite spirit. That is a humble, tender heart, one that isn’t pretending to be okay. God’s salvation meets us there. We don’t have to polish our pain before we bring it to Him.
Maybe you are in some difficult days right now. You may not need advice or a solution. You may just need to know that things will be okay, and that you are not walking through this alone.
Today, stop trying to hold it together. Tell the LORD exactly how heavy it is. He is nigh. And if you know someone who is hurting, remember that you don’t need perfect words. Sometimes the greatest gift you can give is to show up and stay close, the way He does for us.
