Although the fig tree shall not blossom… yet I will rejoice in the LORD… — Habakkuk 3:17–18
I was once talking with someone who seemed to have everything going for them in life. They had a wonderful job that paid a healthy salary. They had a beautiful home, a nice car, and a wonderful family. Yet, this person was frustrated beyond measure. They felt as though their life was in shambles.
On another occasion, I met someone when I was working as a paramedic who had nothing. They had no earthly possessions, but they were happy. They continually thanked God for His goodness. What a stark difference!
The contrast reminded me that joy and happiness are not the same thing.
Happiness often depends on circumstances. When things go well, we feel well. When outcomes change, so does our emotional state. But Habakkuk speaks of something deeper. He lists real losses: crops failing, fields empty, livestock gone. These were not minor inconveniences; they were devastating realities. And yet he declares, “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD.”
Joy, as Scripture presents it, is not a denial of hardship. It is confidence in God’s character despite it. It is rooted not in what we have, but in who He is.
Habakkuk’s joy was anchored in the Lord Himself. Even when visible blessings disappeared, God remained faithful. Even when circumstances deteriorated, God did not.
There will be times when the “fig tree does not blossom” in our lives. Prayers may go unanswered. Plans may fall apart. Expectations may not be met. But joy does not require perfect circumstances. It requires trust.
If your circumstances feel uncertain today, take heart. Joy is not found in having everything align. It is found in knowing the One who holds it all. And He remains steady. Is your joy tied to your circumstances, or to the unchanging character of God?
