“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9
If you ask anyone around me, they will tell you that in many different things, I like to be in control. Many people would try to tell you it’s due to my many years of leadership experience, saying I just like being the boss. But if I am honest, my desire for control of things is that I know I can often control the outcome.
For example, if I am the one driving, I have confidence that I can get myself where I need to go safely. That doesn’t mean others are unsafe drivers, but I know my own habits. I know how I react, what risks I take, and how to adjust when something unexpected happens. Being in control feels reassuring.
And yet, life does not always allow us to stay in the driver’s seat.
There are moments when circumstances remind us that control has limits. Plans change. Outcomes differ from what we expected. Roads we thought were familiar suddenly look different. In those moments, our desire for control is exposed, not because planning is wrong, but because we were never meant to carry the weight of directing our own steps.
Scripture tells us that we may plan our way, but it is the Lord who directs our steps. This is not a rebuke; it is an invitation. God does not dismiss our efforts or intentions. He simply reminds us that true security is found not in managing every outcome, but in trusting the One who sees the whole path.
Letting go of control does not mean we stop being responsible or thoughtful. It means we let go of the belief that everything depends on us. It means trusting God with the things we cannot predict, prevent, or perfectly manage.
If you find yourself holding tightly today, trying to control a situation, a timeline, or an outcome, pause and remember this: God is faithful in directing our steps, even when the road ahead feels uncertain. Peace often comes not when we gain more control, but when we place our trust in Him.
