Staying Near

Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. — Isaiah 55:6

Years ago, I remember traveling for work and spending many nights away from home. My wife and I had not been married for very long, and the trips I would take for work would often take me away from home for most of the week. It wasn’t uncommon for me to only be home one or two days over the weekend. The distance made things challenging, but we overcame that distance as we talked regularly on the phone while I was gone.

Even though we were apart, the relationship was maintained through intentional connection. We didn’t wait for problems to arise before talking. We made space for conversation because the relationship mattered. Staying connected required effort, attention, and consistency.

In many ways, this is what Scripture invites us into with God. We are told to seek the Lord while He may be found and to call upon Him while He is near. This is not a warning that God is fleeting or difficult to reach, but an invitation to remain attentive to His presence. God is near, but we must be willing to seek Him.

Searching for God does not always look dramatic. Often, it is found in regular, intentional moments: prayer, Scripture, stillness, and quiet obedience. When we neglect these rhythms, distance can quietly grow, not because God has moved away, but because we have stopped paying attention.

God desires relationship, not formality. He invites us to call upon Him, to seek Him, and to draw near, not out of fear, but out of love. The nearness of God is a gift, but it is one we must choose to respond to.

If you find yourself longing for God today, take heart. That desire itself is an invitation. God is near, and He welcomes those who seek Him with sincerity and trust.

What regular rhythm might God be inviting you to restore so that you can remain attentive to His presence?
