It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. — Lamentations 3:22-23

Once, I was working on a project in my garage when things started to go wrong. As I was doing my work, I realized that I had measured something wrong. Having made a mistake, I tried to find a way to compensate for it. I started to change my plans to accommodate the mistake.

As I started with the new plans, I realized that I had made another mistake in calculations, leaving me with another challenge. I might look back on this moment now and chuckle, but I was extremely frustrated at the time. I’m far from a carpenter, but I have a tendency to want to be a perfectionist. It frustrated me that I made these mistakes.

After several moments of trying to find a new solution, I realized that the best option was to start again. I went back to the wood that I was working with, cut a new board, and started fresh. With this fresh start, I was able to get back to my project and start seeing it come together as I had hoped in the beginning.

There are times in our lives when we make mistakes. Then, we often make more mistakes attempting to cover up or accommodate the mistake that we made. Rather than continuing the mistakes, we should focus on getting a fresh start.

Thankfully, our God is one of grace and mercy. When we sin and make mistakes, He will forgive. Instead of trying to cover up our mistakes and make up for them with other bad decisions, we should confess them. God is faithful to forgive and give us the fresh start that we need.
