For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. — 2 Timothy 1:7

Not long ago, I was reading a study about the influence of social media on society. The study had focused on TikTok and other social media platforms, sharing how individuals are easily influenced by what they see on these catchy videos. It was determined that people spend hours watching these videos, being conditioned to accept certain ideals or situations.

The study was sharing how these social media platforms should be adopted by others in order to promote their cause. Businesses could use these platforms to share about their business and promote sales. Organizations could use them to promote social causes. Even religious organizations were mentioned as they could be used to advance education and adoption of values.

As Paul writes his words of encouragement to Timothy, he shared that Timothy should not be living a life of fear, but he ends his words of wisdom by saying he should have a sound mind. This is idea of having proper influences and everything in its right place. In my words, Paul is saying to clean out the garbage from your mind.

The things that attempt to influence us are far more than social media. Television, movies, books, and many other things try to influence us. Society wants to push us to give up our morals and Godly values to be more accepting. Instead, we should clean out the garbage and focus on God!

What is influencing you and keeping you from having a sound mind? Our main influence should be God and His word. Other Christian influences may fail us, but God never will! Today, don’t live in the distraction of this life, which will push you into a life of fear. Instead, clean out the garbage and enjoy a sound mind that is focused on God and following His will for your life.
