Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. — Proverbs 19:15

Several years ago, I remember sitting and talking with someone who I went to church with. The person was much older than I was and he always shared wisdom with me as we spoke. He told me about how he worked for years, well beyond what most people thought was reasonable for him to work. Even after he retired, he still found ways to work and stay busy.

As we continued to talk, he shared with me that he believed that God designed our lives to do things. He shared scripture about how God designed us with a purpose and plan in mind. Then, he reminded me of several scriptures with warnings about being lazy. One of those was Proverbs 19:15.

In this verse, we are reminded that slothfulness, or laziness, casteth into a deep sleep. In other words, being lazy causes you to become lethargic. It even continues to say that it can cause you to suffer hunger. Laziness can cause you to lose your spark and to be unable to provide as you wish for yourself and your family.

God didn’t design our bodies to sit around and do nothing. In the beginning, Adam was created to tend to God’s creation. God created us with a purpose, that includes being active, working, and doing our part to contribute to life and caring for our families. We were never designed to sit around and be lazy.

As Christians, we should never simply give up and sit down. God designed our lives to keep on working! We should be working for God, working to provide for our families, and working to help those around us in need. Today, examine your heart for any areas where laziness may have crept in. Rather than letting it cause you to become lethargic, have God help you find ways to keep on working for Him!
