How do we treat our neighbor?

Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders. — Jeremiah 9:4

Years ago, there was a show that many people are familiar with. The show appeared on local PBS stations and featured a man known as Mr Rogers. His television show focused on a wide variety of subjects but was known for its catchy tunes and an expression of compassion from one to another. He often referred to those around him as his neighbor.

He certainly had a passion for sharing the importance of care and compassion to those around you. He is credited with saying the following: “Neighbors are people who live close to each other. Neighbors look at each other; they talk to each other; they listen to each other. That’s how they get to know each other.”

But in our day, many people have no idea who their neighbor is. We live in a society that is consumed by headphones, social media, and more. People don’t often think of their neighbors, talk to them, or even want to look at them. In fact, some go as far as to look the other way.

The Bible is clear that those around us are truly our neighbors, and God expects us to love them. He expects that we treat them appropriately and in a Christ-like manner. That wouldn’t be ignoring them. Instead, it would be paying attention to them and showing them Jesus in our lives.

If your neighbors were asked about you, what would they say? Would they know who you are? Would they know you are a Christian? How we live our lives in front of our neighbors is a witness, showing who we really are. Rather than being consumed in ourselves, today, take a moment to get to know your neighbor and let your light shine!

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
