O taste and see that the LORD is good. — Psalm 34:8

Several years ago, my wife and I had the opportunity to do something interesting while on vacation. We were eating dinner at a restaurant and we were invited to sit at the Chef’s table. The table was right in front of the kitchen, and the dinner had a custom menu that was only available at the Chef’s table. There was just one thing that was different, you didn’t order. You simply ate what was presented.

There was a wide variety of food that was placed on the table in front of us. Some of the food was quite good. In fact, one of the items was perhaps the best I had ever tasted. But then, there were some things that were placed on the table that weren’t so great. A few of them I couldn’t even bring myself to eat.

What I quickly learned that night is that we all have different things we like. Others who may have been given that same meal would have loved it. Perhaps they would have hated what I thought was great. We all have different preferences and what we thought was good may have varied.

But never once have I experienced God in a way that wasn’t good. The circumstances that I was in may have been less than ideal. Perhaps I was discouraged, depressed, or perplexed. I may have been nervous, worried, excited, or any of a variety of other things. But God was still good.

In the good times of life, God is good. In the bad times of life, God is good. The goodness of God never changes. But how we experience and interpret that goodness depends on our outlook and perception. How do you see the goodness of God? Do you see it as a blessing each day, or are you disappointed because it wasn’t quite what you wanted? As the psalmist writes, taste and see. The Lord is good!

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
