For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. — Isaiah 25:4

My family and I were recently in Florida and it was hot! Being from the mountains of North Carolina, we do not often experience extreme heat like that in Florida. I recall one particular day that the heat index was well over 100 degrees, and my son kept complaining about it.

As we walked around outside, he looked for any ounce of shade that he could find. Just the smallest shadow was enough, and he would run to it and attempt to hide in it. He knew that the shade may not be perfect, but it was protecting him from the sun’s burning rays.

I often laughed as I watched him walk. He would go side to side in search of shade. He would lag behind, leaving the shade at the last possible moment. He would hurry up ahead so that he could enjoy the shade for a few extra seconds. He enjoyed the temporary relief and protection the shade provided.

Here in Isaiah, God is described as a shadow from the heat. How many times have you found yourself in the middle of the heat of this world, needing a shadow? The cares of life pressing down, the struggles of work weighing on you more than ever.

It’s refreshing to know that we have a shadow when the heat of this life becomes too much to bear. We don’t have to run all over searching for it. We just have to go straight to our Heavenly Father. If you find yourself in the middle of the heat of life, there is a shadow for you!
