Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. — Ephesians 5:19

Songs have an interesting way of speaking to someone. For many, a song is used from the time they are young. Perhaps a mother sings to their baby in an effort to help calm them. Or perhaps the song is used as a way to help a child learn an important lesson. Whatever it may be, song plays an important role in life as we start out.

But as we get older, the importance of song doesn’t change very much. Most kids love to listen to music. As a teenager, they have their favorite songs, groups, or singers. Nearly everyday, I walk around and see people with headphones in. The few who I have interrupted have often shared that they were listening to a song.

The world knows this is a great way to influence someone. It doesn’t take much listening to hear a lot of interesting ideas being shared by the songs of our day. They often promote violence, drug and alcohol use, abuse, and more. But more than that, it plants those words in our hearts!

In the verse here, it talks about the melody of our hearts, or the song of our hearts. If you reflect on your life today, what is the song in your heart? Paul encourages them to have a song of praise, spiritual songs that make melody to God. But are we distracted by the songs of the world?

If the song in your heart was played for all to hear, what would they hear? Does the song in your heart lift up God? As we go about our day, our hearts should meditate on God in many ways. First, through His word. But second, through the song in our hearts!

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue its work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
