Our dependence on the Shepherd

So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations. — Psalm 79:13

Not long after we adopted our son, we began the process to determine if he would ever be able to hear. In China, he had been given hearing aids but we quickly learned that he was unable to hear anything with them. So the doctors decided to start conducting some tests to find out what options were available.

Over the course of a few months, he had multiple scans. He had CT scans, an MRI, hearing tests, and many other things. Our desire was for him to get cochlear implants so that he could hear and start learning to talk. But that decision was not in our control. We had to determine if everything was physically present and formed right so that they would work.

As we went through the process, I was nervous that we would not receive approval to proceed. Each time we would go for tests, I had to turn the situation over to God. I wanted to be in control of the situation. Instead, I was fully dependent on the process and control was out of my hands.

Asaph certainly realized that when he made the statements of “thy people” and “sheep of thy pasture.” We are sheep, fully dependent on our Shepherd for everything. Though we often try to control things ourselves, we must realize that God is our Shepherd and in control.

Our dependence upon the Shepherd is not up for debate. We are His people. We are the sheep of His pasture. Instead of fighting God, we should realize our dependence on the Shepherd and give Him full control of our lives. That allows us to do as Asaph says, giving God the thanks and praise that He deserves!

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
