Losing Hope?

If it’s hard to see a way forward right now, pause here for a few quiet minutes.
Hope You Don’t Have to Manufacture

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” — 1 Peter 1:3 (KJV)

Maybe you don’t feel hopeful right now. Maybe you’ve tried to talk yourself into a better outlook, and it hasn’t worked. That’s alright. Biblical hope was never meant to be a feeling you manufacture on your own.

Hope, in Scripture, isn’t wishful thinking. It isn’t positive thinking, either, or a confidence that things are about to get easier. Sometimes circumstances change. Sometimes they don’t, not for a long while. Hope like that would only ever be as strong as whatever is happening around you.

Biblical hope is anchored somewhere sturdier. Peter wrote those words to believers who were scattered, suffering, and far from comfortable.
He didn’t tell them their hope rested on their situation improving.
He told them it rested on what God had already done.

Notice where that hope comes from.
Not from your circumstances.
Not from your own resolve.
It comes from God’s abundant mercy, and it stands on something that already happened: Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. That is settled. Nothing you are facing today can undo it.

This doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real, that it will resolve quickly, or that enough faith guarantees the outcome you’re hoping for. God does not promise any of us an easy road. What He promises is Himself: His presence, His faithfulness, His character, which does not change with your circumstances.

So hope, for the Christian, isn’t a mood you talk yourself into. It is anchored in the living God — in who He is and in what He has done through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

You don’t have to feel hopeful to reach for hope. You just have to bring what little you have left, even if it’s almost nothing, to the God who supplies it.

If you want words to start with, try these: “Lord, I don’t feel hopeful right now, but I’m choosing to trust that You are who You say You are.”

Take a breath. This moment is not the end of your story, and neither is your hope.
