How Shall They Hear?

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” — Romans 10:14

Have you ever faced a moment in life where you needed something, but didn’t know what or where to turn? Perhaps friends weren’t comforting. Family wasn’t consoling. And you found yourself searching for something, not sure where it would come from.

That kind of searching is real, and it is more common than we think. Someone you know may be in that place right now.

Paul asks a series of questions that build on each other. How can they call on Him whom they have not believed? How can they believe in Him whom they have not heard of? How can they hear without someone telling them?

The logic is plain and heavy. People cannot call on a Savior they have never heard about. The invitation to call on the Lord is open to everyone, but it only reaches people through people.

We may picture a man in a pulpit. And yes, the preaching of the gospel matters. But the principle reaches further. Ordinary believers are the ones sitting next to people who are searching. We are in the neighborhoods, the workplaces, and the family gatherings where someone is looking for something they cannot name.

If we’re honest, most of us have stayed quiet at the very moment someone was searching. We assumed someone else would speak, or we told ourselves the time wasn’t right.

This is a word to the comfortable. Salvation is not hard to find because God hides it. Often, it is hard to find because those who know it are silent.

Think of one person you know who seems to be searching and doesn’t yet know Jesus. Just one name. Pray for that person today, and ask God to give you a chance to speak.

You don’t need a perfect speech. You only need to tell what you know to be true. Someone may be waiting to hear it.
