This Is the Day

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. — Psalm 118:24

There are many times I can be going about my day, and then something strikes me. The day is moving. Things are happening. Life is progressing at its normal pace. And then suddenly it is like God reaches into the middle of it all and makes Himself impossible to miss. A moment of clarity. A realization of His presence that stops me mid-stride. Something in the ordinary flow of the day that could only be Him. And I think, there You are. I almost missed that.

But there are other days, too. The ones I look back on at the end and realize I spent somewhere else entirely. Not in the day I was actually given, but in the noise of everything pressing in around me. The unresolved situation. The worry that kept circling. The distraction that occupied the space where presence should have been. And as the day was almost gone, I could look back and see that God had been moving and working and showing Himself in ways that I had walked right past. He was there. I just was not.

Psalm 118 is not a casual morning verse. It is a declaration written from the other side of something genuinely hard. The psalmist has been surrounded by enemies, pressed on every side, nearly consumed. And having come through it, they write this with the full weight of what they have survived behind them. This is the day the LORD hath made. This specific day. Not the ideal one. Not the one we planned or hoped for. This one.

The word made here carries the weight of intention. God did not simply allow this day to happen. He made it. He formed it with the same deliberateness He brings to everything He creates. This particular Tuesday or Thursday or unremarkable Wednesday, with its difficult meeting and its unresolved situation and its ordinary demands, was made by God with purpose and placed in front of you as a gift.

And the invitation is to be in it. Not in yesterday, rehearsing what went wrong or replaying what should have been said differently. Not in tomorrow, running calculations about what might happen or building anxiety around what has not yet arrived. In this day. The one that is actually happening. The one where God is actually present and actually moving and actually trying to show Himself in ways that are easy to miss when we are somewhere else in our minds.

Most of us spend a remarkable amount of the day the LORD has made somewhere other than in it. We carry yesterday into it and spend our energy on things that are already finished. We drag tomorrow into it and spend our peace on things that have not yet happened and may never happen the way we fear. And the day itself: the one God made and placed in front of us with His presence already moving through it, passes largely unoccupied.

Rejoice and be glad in it is not an instruction to manufacture cheerfulness about difficult circumstances. It is an invitation to show up. To be present in this day with the people who are actually in it. To do the work that is actually in front of you. To look for God in the ordinary flow of the hours rather than only in the dramatic moments.

He is moving through your day right now. Not just the big moments. The small ones too. Be here for it. This is the day the LORD hath made. Do not spend it somewhere else.
