“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” — 2 Timothy 3:16–17
Not long ago, I was in a store looking through the books. I found myself in the self-help section — shelf after shelf of them. Books on health, promising to unlock the secret to finally feeling well. Books on wealth, promising the formula nobody else had figured out. Books on happiness, each one claiming to have found what was missing.
Every cover made the same quiet promise: this is the answer you’ve been looking for.
And the sad truth is, people believe it. They’ll buy the book, underline the pages, build a life around the method, and when it doesn’t hold, they’ll move to the next one on the shelf. There’s always another author claiming to have solved what the last one didn’t.
I stood there for a minute just taking it in. So many words, so many systems, so much confidence, and not one of them claiming to be enough on its own. That’s the tell. They’re all pointing past themselves to the next thing.
Scripture doesn’t do that. Paul tells Timothy that the Word of God is “throughly furnished unto all good works” — not partially furnished, not a helpful starting point, not one voice among many worth considering. Furnished. Complete. There isn’t a shelf behind it with a better edition.
That’s what makes it different from everything else in that store. Every self-help book is written by someone still figuring it out, offering their best guess. The Bible is the one book written by the One who already knows, about you, about what’s broken, about what actually fixes it.
I don’t say that to be dismissive of people looking for help. I understand. Life is hard, and we want something solid to hold on to. But we don’t need one more voice added to the pile. We need to recognize that we already have the one that’s sufficient, and stop treating it like it’s just another option on the shelf.
