Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? — Esther 4:14b
There are memories from my years as a paramedic that I return to often, especially in the difficult moments of life. I remember the calls that stayed with me long after the shift ended. Young children whose lives were cut short far too early. A mother or father taken from their family in a moment no one was prepared for. I responded to calls that no amount of training fully prepares you for. Moments that carry a weight that will never leave me.
For a long time, I did not fully understand what those moments were doing in my life. Now I do. God was preparing me.
Not for just any moment. Not for a general sense of empathy or a vague capacity for compassion. He was preparing me specifically. For a ministry. For the specific work of Another Well Ministries: sitting in the ordinary and difficult places of people’s lives and pointing them toward a God who is present in every one of them. The grief I witnessed in those ambulances, the weight I carried from those calls, the exposure to the most vulnerable moments of human life, all of it was being woven into something I could not yet see. I was there for such a time as this.
When Mordecai speaks these words to Esther, the phrase sounds like encouragement. And it is. But it is more than that. It is a reframing of her entire understanding of why she is where she is. She had not stumbled into the palace. She had not become queen through a fortunate series of events that happened to work out in her favor. She was placed. Deliberately. Purposefully. And the placement was not for her own comfort or security.
It was for a moment. A specific, time-sensitive, unrepeatable moment that required someone with exactly her access, exactly her position, and exactly her story to be standing exactly where she was standing. The phrase such a time as this carries the weight of that specificity. Not any time. This time. Not any person. This person. Not a general calling. A specific one.
That is how God operates in the lives of those who belong to Him. He is not placing people generally into lives of vague purpose. He is placing specific people into specific moments that require exactly what those people carry. The background that seemed like a disadvantage. The season that felt like preparation for nothing. The calling that arrived before the confidence did. The grief that seemed to serve no purpose. All of it, every chapter of the story, was being arranged for a moment that required it.
The paramedic calls I thought were simply part of the job were actually part of the preparation. The weight I carried from those moments was not wasted grief. It was the curriculum for a ministry I did not yet know God was creating.
You are not in your current season by accident. You are not in your current place for general reasons. The specific challenges you have faced, the specific losses you have carried, the specific experiences that have shaped you — they are not random. They are purposeful. They are the preparation for a moment that requires exactly what God has been building in you.
You are here for such a time as this. Not some other time. Not a more convenient season. Not when you feel more prepared or more polished or more certain. This time. Right now. Exactly as you are.
Your story is not general. It is specific. And God has been preparing you for this exact moment all along.
