The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. — Psalm 37:23
We often hear people say they were in the right place at the right time. Recently I came across a video online where someone had captured something on camera that was almost impossible to catch. The timing was extraordinary. The angle was perfect. The moment was so unlikely that most people watching it could barely believe it had been recorded at all. The person behind the camera called it fortunate luck. A happy accident. Being in the right place at the right time.
But I could not help seeing it differently. That person did not wander into that moment by chance. Their steps had been ordered. The route they took, the decision to have a camera ready, the specific moment they chose to point it in that direction, none of it was random. God had ordained their steps to be exactly where they were for exactly that moment. What looked like luck from the outside was providence from the inside.
The psalmist says it plainly. The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD. Not suggested. Not loosely guided. Ordered. The word carries the weight of intentional arrangement, the kind of deliberate placement that leaves nothing to chance. God is not watching our lives unfold and occasionally nudging us in a better direction. He is actively ordering the steps of those who belong to Him, working all of it, the detours and the direct paths, the unexpected turns and the long stretches of ordinary, toward purposes He has already established.
That truth has enormous implications for how we understand where we are right now. The job that did not feel like a calling. The city you ended up in that was never part of your plan. The relationship that came from an unexpected introduction. The circumstance that seemed like an interruption but turned out to be an appointment. None of it arrived by accident. The steps that brought you to this specific moment in your life were ordered by a God who does not make wrong turns and does not waste a single step.
We live in a culture that celebrates being in the right place at the right time as though it were purely a matter of fortune. And when things do not go our way we call it bad luck, bad timing, or simply the random chaos of an unpredictable world. But the believer has a different framework entirely. There is no such thing as coincidence in the life of someone whose steps are being ordered by God.
You are not here by accident. The place you are in right now, however it arrived, however unplanned it felt, however far it is from what you imagined, is a place God ordered your steps to reach. He did not lose track of you on the way here. He did not accidentally land you somewhere He cannot use. He placed you here with intention, with purpose, and with a plan that your partial view of the story cannot yet fully show you.
The person with the camera thought they got lucky. They did not. They were placed. So were you. The steps that brought you here were ordered. And the steps ahead of you are being ordered too.
You are not here by accident. You are here by appointment. God ordered every step that brought you to this moment.
