Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. — Matthew 5:16
We do not always know who is watching.
Many years ago, I received an email from my supervisor at the EMS service where I worked. It was a note of thanks for my work on a specific call. But what stood out was not the recognition itself, it was what my supervisor said inside it. He told me that someone on the scene that day had been an elected official, and that this person had taken notice. They had acknowledged my professionalism and the way I handled the situation.
I had no idea. As far as I was concerned, that person was just another face on the scene. I was not performing for anyone. I was not aware of any audience. I was simply doing my job the way I always tried to do it.
That moment has stayed with me.
When Jesus tells His followers to let their light shine, He is not calling them to a performance. He is not asking them to behave differently when important people are in the room. He is describing something that happens naturally when faith is genuine, it shows. It becomes visible. Not because we are trying to be seen, but because what is truly inside us eventually works its way out.
The people around us are watching more than we realize. A coworker who has never said a word about faith is quietly observing how you respond under pressure. A neighbor is noticing how you treat people who cannot do anything for you. Someone in your life is paying attention to whether what you say on Sunday matches who you are on Tuesday.
We rarely know when those moments are happening. And that is precisely the point.
If we only shine when we know someone is looking, that is not light, that is performance. But a life that is consistent, quietly faithful, and genuinely rooted in Christ will be noticed eventually. Not because we pushed for recognition, but because light is simply hard to hide.
Jesus did not say to shine when it is convenient or when the right people are watching. He said let it shine. Continually. Consistently. In the ordinary moments, just as much as the significant ones.
You may not know who is watching today. But someone is. Live in a way that points them toward God, not because you are trying to impress anyone, but because that is simply who you are.
