A Different Kind of Peace

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you… — John 14:27

It was a long day. I had just walked in the door from one of the worst days I had ever had at work, and had no idea what I was walking into. My son was in a mood where he did not want to listen to my wife. She was frustrated, he was frustrated, and I just needed a few moments of peace.

But peace did not greet me at the door.

There are days like that, when the chaos does not wait for us to catch our breath. Responsibilities pile up. Emotions run high. The noise feels constant. In those moments, we often long for peace to mean silence, resolution, or control over what is happening around us.

Yet when Jesus speaks of peace, He makes an important distinction. My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth. The world offers peace when circumstances settle down. Christ offers peace that remains even when they do not.

The peace of Christ is not dependent on a quiet house, a smooth day at work, or the absence of conflict. It is rooted in His presence. It is the steady confidence that He is near, that He is sovereign, and that we are not carrying the weight of everything alone.

That evening, the situation at home did not instantly resolve. But my mindset shifted when I remembered that Christ’s peace was not something I had to manufacture or earn. It was something He had already given. Even in the middle of the current frustration, I could pause, breathe, and trust that He was present and helping me through.

Peace does not always change our environment. Sometimes it changes our posture within it.

If today feels loud or overwhelming, remember this: Christ’s peace is not fragile. It does not disappear when circumstances intensify. It remains steady because it comes from Him. Where are you looking for peace today? Are you looking for peace in changed circumstances or in Christ’s presence?
