In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Not long ago, I remember having purchased something for my son at the store. It was something he needed, but it was far from anything exciting. I will never forget the words he said as I handed it to him: “That’s great, thank you so much!”
His response stayed with me. Not because of what the gift was, but because of how he received it. There was no disappointment that it wasn’t more. No comparison to what it could have been. Just simple gratitude for what was given.
Scripture invites us into that same posture. In everything give thanks. Not because everything is easy, desirable, or joyful, but because God is present in every circumstance. Gratitude trains our hearts to recognize provision even when life feels ordinary, delayed, or unresolved.
We often associate thankfulness with abundance or answered prayers. But gratitude, at its deepest, grows in moments that feel unremarkable — daily needs met, strength to endure another day, grace given quietly rather than dramatically. These are the gifts we can easily overlook.
Giving thanks does not deny hardship. It acknowledges that even here, God is still faithful. Like a child receiving a simple gift, gratitude teaches us to receive what God provides without resentment, comparison, or demand.
Today, we are invited to give thanks not just for what excites us, but for what sustains us. What has God provided in your life that may feel ordinary — yet is worth thanking Him for today?
