Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. — Matthew 1:19-21
The situation of the day was no doubt challenging for Joseph. He had the thoughts about putting Mary away, but sparing her from shame. In fact, putting her away privately was most likely going to save her from death given the accusations that would be made.
He was a just man and when the angel of the Lord appeared to him, he sought to calm Joseph’s concerns. There was probably concerns from Joseph about himself, his reputation, Mary, his family, and others. What will others say? What will others think? How will they react?
The angel shared the news that Jesus was coming to change the world, to save the world from sin. Even though Joseph didn’t know how to understand all that was going on, he realized that what God was doing was more important. It was something bigger than him alone.
There are times when we face things in life which may be extremely difficult. We may find ourselves asking questions similar to those of Joseph about what people may think or say. How will they react when we choose to do what God wants us to do, even when it appears crazy to the world?
When we face those difficult moments, it is important that we realize that following God is the most important thing. It may be difficult and challenging, but God knows exactly what He is doing. Instead of doing what is easy, our focus should be to follow God’s will.
