And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. — 2 Samuel 7:12-13
Many years ago when I worked as a paramedic, I remember sharing bad news with family members. It was not always easy sharing that a loved one had passed. Sometimes it was natural, sometimes it was a tragic situation. Either way, it was sharing some of the most challenging news with them.
I would often think of what would go through their minds as I shared bad news. Families who had plans together, but perhaps were no longer going to be able to enjoy those plans. Perhaps it was missed days or opportunities in life. That’s how I see this scripture here involving David.
I have no doubt David wanted to build the temple, but he wouldn’t be able to. Here, God tells him that Solomon, his son, would be the one to build the temple. One of the things that David wanted more than anything he could not have. That moment was gone.
There are times that God sees fit in our lives to take things away. Maybe it is a loved one, maybe it is a moment, or perhaps it is something else. When God takes things away, it is part of his perfect will and plan, even when we do not see or understand why.
Has God taken something away from you in this life? That can be some of the most challenging things that we experience. No matter what, trust in God’s purpose and plan. He is working all things according to His will. While we may not understand it right now, one day we will!
