O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. — Psalm 107:1
Not long ago, I was listening to someone share a story about how they were frustrated. Their children were not appreciative of what was being done for them. They said they even wondered if they cared at all or appreciated all the hard work it took to care for them.
I couldn’t help but think about my own life and how many times I have appeared unthankful. My parents taught me to say thank you, but there are many times that I have forgotten or overlooked the simple act of expressing a thank you to someone. Especially to God!
Day in and day out, God provides and cares for me unlike anyone else can. Yet, so many times I fail to stop and thank Him as much as I should. I thought back to our friends frustration and I thought to myself, I wonder if God is ever frustrated because we are not thankful in the same way.
As I thought about it, the Lord spoke to me and reminded me that many times a child never realizes what a parent does for them. They may not understand the height or depth of what was done, so they may not understand how to be thankful. That is certainly the case with God. There are many times He does things for me that I never see or understand until sometime much later. At the time it happened, I certainly didn’t understand how to be thankful.
That’s why I am thankful for days like Thanksgiving. While I may not always understand how to be thankful for all that God does, it gives me a moment out of a chaotic life to simply focus on being thankful. Today, I am thankful that He’s a loving God who cares for me even when I don’t know and understand. I am also thankful that He’s a wonderful Heavenly Father who sometimes helps me understand later, so I can be thankful for the things I missed.
