Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. — Psalm 23:5
Not long ago, I attended an event that required me to have dinner with a lot of people whom I did not know. We went around the table, and many were introducing themselves in more detail. They shared details about their home lives, families, prior work, and other things.
As we waited on our food, it wasn’t difficult to start putting things together about the people who I had things in common with and those who I did not. There were certainly some people at this table who I wouldn’t have chosen to go to dinner with on most nights. Yet, here I was at the table with these strangers eating dinner.
I couldn’t help but think back on this verse in Psalm 23 about how our Shepherd prepares a table for us. The verse specifically talks about how it is in the presence of our enemies. In other words, the circumstances are not perfect, the enemy is there watching our table.
Yet many times, instead of trusting in God’s plan and purpose, we find ourselves inviting the enemy to sit at our table. Instead of enjoying the divine presence of God, we seem to prefer the presence of the enemy. In my reflection, it raised the question in my mind of who is sitting at my table?
As you reflect today, who is sitting at your table? Are you living your life enjoying the presence of God, or have you invited the enemy to your table? Instead of spending time with the enemy, invite God to your table and enjoy His presence today!
