Thou shalt have no other gods before me. — Exodus 20:3
Blaise Pascal, among others, is often attributed to a popular statement. That statement is, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.” While those exact words were not put in that order by Pascal, what he did say was very similar.
Pascal also made some other comments. In talking about happiness, Pascal realized that true happiness could not be found in this world. In fact, Pascal said the following when considering how man tries to solve the happiness problem in life. “He in vain tries to fill from all his surroundings, seeking from things absent the help he does not obtain in things present? But these are all inadequate because the infinite abyss can only be filled by an infinite and immutable Object, that is to say, only by God Himself.”
Due to sin, everyone is born with a void in their hearts. It is a void that robs everyone of true happiness and satisfaction as they try to fill that void with things of this world. But things of this world cannot satisfy!
Only God can satisfy the void in our hearts, bringing forgiveness of sin and true happiness. Yet, many will spend their entire lives putting other gods before the one true God. The gods of money, sports, possessions, and many other things.
What is filling the void in your life? Is God first, or have you put other gods before Him? You cannot find happiness in all the things this world has to offer. True happiness and satisfaction in life can only be found in the one true God.
