Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. — Psalm 83:1
There are many times in life when I love silence. For example, there are many times that I have been around large groups of people. Perhaps the room was extremely loud and it was in that moment where I would love to have just been alone. Or, if you are a parent, you know the joy of having kids around and the silence that you may often wish for.
In the moments of silence, we often find comfort and consolation. We are able to reflect, recharge, and perhaps even find renewed perspective in situations of life. Silence can bring about many positive things. But there are times that silence can be concerning. In this Psalm, David was experiencing a concerning silence. The silence wasn’t from those around Him. Instead, the silence was from God.
Things in life looked bleak at this moment for David. In following verses, he described how his enemies were about him. If I could relate it to anything, it was as if life all around him was ganging up on him. Everyone and everything was against him.
In that moment of silence, David became concerned. He needed to hear God’s voice. He wanted God to move in his life. We all have these moments in life, and perhaps you are in one now. Perhaps everything in life seems against you. Maybe it feels as though God is silent, not working, and has forgotten you.
But have no fear. While you may not be able to hear Him, see Him, or feel Him, God has not forgotten you! He has promised that you would never be forsaken. You are never forgotten. Call on Him today, let Him know that you need to hear from Him and take comfort that He will hear you!
