Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. — Matthew 13:21

It wasn’t so long ago that I was talking to someone about the yard around our home. Not long after we moved into the home, we quickly realized that the yard was not in great shape. After many attempts to help it improve, we realized that we needed to make some drastic repairs.

As the expert was talking with me, he began sharing about how the different grasses take root. Around our home, this specific type of grass was used and requires a solid root system. Once it is rooted, it’s hard to move it. But until it is rooted, it can be easily moved from place to place.

After having some of the yard repaired, he gave me strict instructions. I needed to water the yard so much per day and do other actions to help it take root. We weren’t to pull on the grass or cut the grass, which could cause it to not take root. But soon, if we listened to the instructions, the grass would be rooted and growing strong!

Roots are extremely important to our Christian lives. Many Christians are rooted among the stones and thorns of the world. The roots of their Christianity are shallow, leaving them easily influenced. Rather than hearing the word of God and growing stronger, they are easily manipulated in times of trials and struggles.

To get rooted in our faith, we must receive a steady diet of the word of God. We must spend plenty of time with God in prayer. We must also focus on following God’s will in our lives. If we don’t firmly root ourselves in our faith, we will find ourselves easily influenced and away from God.
