Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. — Psalm 57:1
My heart was broken amid the storms across the southeast in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Millions across the southern US were affected in a variety of ways. In my home state of North Carolina, it seems that entire towns were washed away and countless homes lost. Powerful mudslides and water rushed through the area like I had never seen before.
While the storm was predicted, no one imagined the magnitude of the flooding and effects that were seen. Lives were changed in the course of just a few hours, as people lost their homes, their businesses, and even friends and family members.
Over the next few weeks, the tragedy in the lives of those affected will continue. Sometimes, those moments of tragedy drag on for what seems like an eternity. Amid the tragedies of life, we must never forget the refuge that we have in God. He knows exactly what we all face in times of tragedy and the grace we need to make it through.
From the time that tragedy strikes our lives until the tragedy is over, God has mercy and grace to meet the need. While we may struggle to find a place of refuge in this world, we can find refuge in the shadow of His wings.
Tragedy is a part of our life here in this world. Maybe you have been affected by this tragedy. Maybe it is another tragedy. No matter what, there is comfort in the tragedies of life. We have a refuge in God. Pray that God help those affected and living in tragedy to find comfort in Him.
