But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. — James 5:12

American history is a subject that I have always loved. One person who has fascinated me is our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. He is well-known for many things, such as leading our nation during the Civil War, the Gettysburg Address, and even his assassination. While he was not known for his faith as many others, he was known for his nickname, Honest Abe.

Lincoln was fond of that nickname and wore it proudly. He wanted his reputation to be one that people could count on him. He wanted to be known for honesty, not only in his personal life but in his professional life. He knew the importance of being honest.

The Bible is filled with reminders of the importance of honesty. In this verse of James, we are reminded that we should be trustworthy. In the Old Testament, we are reminded that we should not lie to one another in Leviticus 19:11. Proverbs reminds us time and again to watch the words that come out of our mouths.

God expects honesty from anyone who is a believer. Our statements of yes and no should be truthful. Yet, so many times, we hear stories of how Christians are wavering in their truthfulness. It not only destroys our honest reputation, but it is sin as the word of God clearly says not to do it.

Our lives should bear an honest reputation reflecting truth in all that we do. Not because we are perfect. Every one of us are sinners. Our desire should be to reflect God’s word and point others to Him. We can do that in part by being honest.
