I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. — Jeremiah 17:10

When I worked as a paramedic years ago, there were many times that I would go out on an emergency call where it involved someone’s heart. Perhaps they were having chest pain or shortness of breath, or they just knew that something was wrong. Many times, it ended up being something wrong with the person’s heart.

But in the ambulance, we didn’t have the ability to look inside that person’s chest to see what was wrong. I couldn’t physically examine their heart. Instead, I had to rely on tests and machines. The EKG machine might help me understand what was going on. Perhaps listening to their heart would help. We did this in an effort to best understand what was happening so we could start treating them quickly.

But God doesn’t need machines or tests to understand what is going on in your soul, or heart as is referred to in scripture. In fact, He can see right into your heart. In this verse, we are reminded that God searches the heart. In other words, God doesn’t test your heart, He does a heart examination!

If God were to examine your heart today, what would He find? Would God find someone who is committed to serving Him and living for Him? Or would He find someone with a heart that is full of wickedness?

When it comes to our spiritual heart, the best thing we can do is examine our own hearts. Perhaps there is sin and wickedness in our hearts and we need to get started treating them quickly! Our hearts should be fully committed to God. If they are not, we cannot fulfill our purpose for God. We should ask God to help us examine our hearts, finding the things we need to address so we can serve Him fully!

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide.
