And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. — Matthew 2:11
There is so much excitement that surrounds Christmas each year. For many of us, we were excited about Christmas at a young age because of Santa Claus and gifts. As we get older, we may become more excited because it’s a day or two off from work that gives us time to spend with family and friends.
This year, just like many others, we will see people say that we should not say Merry Christmas. We might offend someone who does not believe in Jesus and Christianity. We will see others say this holiday should not exist. They don’t believe there should be anything celebrating a religious “figure.”
Others will argue and say that it’s okay as long as we leave Him as a baby in a manger. In fact, that’s where many people will leave Him. For many, Jesus is nothing but a story, a child that was born in a manger. A reason to get out of work, share some gifts, and sing a few Christmas carols.
But Jesus’ life was not defined by that lowly manger. He didn’t stay there forever. That is just part of the story. The wise men found Jesus in His home with His mother. We continue on to learn more about Him as He grew and became our Savior.
The celebration of Jesus’ birth is a wonderful thing, but remember, it was just the beginning. It was the start of a life that would change the world. It was the fulfillment of a promise. A promise that didn’t begin and end in a manger. That manger was just the beginning!
