Biting your tongue

A fool’s wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame. — Proverbs 12:16

There have been many times in my life when I have been frustrated. Things may have happened that caused me to become upset. You could probably see it on my face. I was not happy, and it clearly showed. We all have those frustrating moments in life. But then, there are the moments that absolutely get the best of you.

Those are the moments when the circumstance or situation has happened, and it causes something to stir inside you. Perhaps it was something that someone said. Maybe they did something to you or someone close to you. No matter what it may be, it causes you to feel this rush of anger or passion, and that’s when you find yourself at risk of saying something or doing something you shouldn’t.

It is part of our human nature to have these types of feelings. Our emotions and our natural reactions seem to take hold. But for the child of God, how we handle these situations is what shows the world we are different. Sometimes, that means biting your tongue, as the old saying goes.

This verse in Proverbs reminds us that a fool lets their wrath be known. They are quick to speak or act when provoked. Everyone around them sees the anger and flaring of those emotions. But the prudent man doesn’t do that. Instead, they respond with meekness. It’s a much different response than what the world says we should give.

Do you ever face situations where you should “bite your tongue?” If we are honest, we all do. But how we respond in those moments sets us apart as Christians. Instead of letting our frustrations rise up and boil over, we should respond with meekness, trusting God to handle the situation.

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
