Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. — Psalm 54:4
When I was a teenager, my family and I moved away not long before I got my driver’s license. Many of my friends were still living where we used to live, so I often drove to meet them in a town between us. We would watch movies, grab food, or many of the other things that teenagers would do.
After a year or so, there was something that happened. I would bring someone from the new area where I lived with me. Often, my friends from my old town would bring someone new with them as well. I remember on many occasions asking the question or being asked, “Who is with you?” These were new people, and we didn’t know who they were or what their influence would be on the group.
Each person had a different influence on the group based on their likes, dislikes, and overall personality. I could tell you those who went to church and those who didn’t based on how they would talk and act. Those who were not influenced by their relationship with God were not a good influence on me or my friends.
In this Psalm, David quickly calls out that God is his helper. But he says the Lord is with those who support and comfort him. In other words, those he was closest with influenced him in a way that followed God. Perhaps we should ask the question of those around us, “Who is with you?”
We need those around us that have a strong relationship with God. Those are the types of people who will genuinely encourage and strengthen you as you go through life. There is enough evil in the world around us. We need to make sure those who we surround ourselves with are Godly influences.
