So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. — Joshua 6:20
It has been several years since archeologists started excavating around the ancient city of Jericho. There have been some who would argue about the findings. But most archeologists agree that the evidence proves that the walls of Jericho did in fact fall as the Bible describes.
There’s a good chance if you read this devotional today, you weren’t doubting that these walls fell. Most believers have read the story, perhaps even hearing it from a young age about what God did that day. It was an incredible statement by a powerful God to all who witnessed the event.
But for those of us who are alive today, we didn’t witness that event. While we can read about it in our Bibles, we didn’t hear the rumble of the walls tumbling. We didn’t hear the horns blow or the shouts of the people that day.
While the event directly relates to the children of Israel, there’s an important lesson that we can see here. The walls were no doubt intimidating, but God had made a promise. I’m convinced those walls could have been made of something indestructible in our eyes, and God would have still caused them to tumble to the ground.
That’s because nothing can stop God! Nothing will prevent Him from doing what He said He would do. No matter how this world and the Devil may try to stop Him, God will overcome. Those should be exciting words for Christians. No matter how bad things may seem and how difficult life may be, God will still be victorious in the end!
Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
