Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. — Psalm 27:11

My wife and I recently lived in South Carolina before we moved back to our home state of North Carolina. Not long after we moved, we learned something interesting about South Carolina. The roads there are some of the roughest roads we have ever driven on. No offense to anyone from South Carolina reading this. There are significant amounts of potholes, and varied aspects of paving. To find a smooth stretch of road in the area we were in was rare.

We would travel home to North Carolina and often joke about how the roads would be much more smooth once we crossed the state line. Our friends would joke about rough roads in North Carolina, and we would often laugh and tell them they had no idea. It was an interesting experience and one we saw claim many a car tire along the interstate.

There is something that is enjoyable about a smooth path. Whether we are driving or walking, it’s nice when the way is flat, smooth, and clear. It makes it a road that is easier to travel.

In this Psalm, David is asking God to lead him in a plain path. He wanted a path that was straight and smooth. One that was easier and more enjoyable to travel. Why? Because of his enemies. He wanted a way to avoid the potholes that they placed in his way, so to speak.

You cannot escape all the potholes of life. They are inevitable. Yet, there are ways to help avoid them. There is nothing wrong with seeking God’s help for your path. Ask God to help you on your way and guide you on your path. Tell Him you need Him to avoid the potholes of life. He’s a faithful God and He will help us if we ask.

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide.
