Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. — Psalm 119:133

When I was younger, I used to do yard work for our neighbor for money. It was a way for me to make some money to pay for things that I wanted well before I was old enough to work for an employer. I was doing some work once, and I had a pretty interesting experience.

We lived in the foothills of North Carolina, and it was not uncommon to see some interesting critters around. I was going about my business in the yard and looked down, and there it was. Between my legs was one of the biggest copperhead snakes I had seen in quite some time. To this day, I count it as a miracle that I was not bitten by that snake as I had evidently stepped over it while doing my work.

The valuable lesson I learned that day was to pay attention to your steps. I could have easily stepped on that snake and been in a terrible situation. I am convinced that God was watching out for me that day. Not just in protection for the snake, but to help me understand an important concept as I grew older.

We often refer to life in this world in the context that we are walking through life. With just one step, we could find ourselves in a wide variety of situations. Sometimes, our steps find solid footing and a good path. At other times, we may find ourselves stepping into dangerous territory. The psalmist knew that.

The world is too dangerous to go through on our own. We need the Master guiding our steps each way. Our prayer should be that God would order our steps to His will, not ours. That we would follow His guidance, not our desires. Or else, we may find ourselves stepping into trouble.
