And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. — Matthew 4:18-19
A few weeks ago, I was in the downtown area where we live and saw what appeared to be some college-age people recording videos. It wasn’t the first time that I have seen this of late. With the emergence of social app like Tik Tok, this has become a more common occurrence. People of all ages are recording videos and posting to various social media platforms.
Why? Because they do not want to be ordinary. It’s a craving for 5 minutes of fame and recognition that will set them apart from everyone else. It’s not an uncommon desire in our day and time as people look to be recognized and noticed for their achievements.
But that recognition does not come for everyone. Millions of social media posts are made everyday and millions are overlooked. Very few go viral, getting the attention that is desired. Truthfully, there is nothing wrong with being ordinary.
In fact, Jesus didn’t look for the influencers of His day to be disciples. He didn’t look to see who had the largest Twitter or Instagram following. He simply looked for the ordinary. They ordinary people, with ordinary jobs, going through ordinary days. The only thing that set them apart was that they were willing to follow Jesus above all.
You don’t have to be something extraordinary in this world to serve God. God is an expert in the ordinary. He can take ordinary people, with ordinary things, and do an extraordinary work. We must simply be willing to follow Him above all. Maybe you feel like you are nothing to this world, just another ordinary person. God loves the ordinary. He will use ordinary people for extraordinary things.
