And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. — Job 1:21
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit another ministry that I have been blessed to work with. That ministry focuses on outreach to the homeless in the community where I live. After a few moments of being there, a man walked through the door. We shared a simple greeting and I asked the question that I ask many people, “How are you today?”
A lot of times I get varied responses. Sometimes people share their struggles, at other times they share a simple thought or word. The response from this man was, “I have been blessed by God beyond what I deserve.” While many may overlook the response as a simple cliche response, I could tell there was something different.
In asking about the man, I was told that he was indeed homeless. He had been homeless for many years in the area and the staff at the mission knew him well. He didn’t have all the things in this world that we would consider as blessings. Yet, he knew that he was extremely blessed by God.
How many of us would say that we have been blessed by God if we were reduced to nothing? What if everything that we had was taken away as in the case of Job. Would we still praise God for His blessings?
God has blessed each of us beyond what we deserved. He saved us, provides for us, cares for us, listens to us, and so much more. Just like the man at the mission, we should all say I have been blessed by God beyond what we deserve!
