Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; — Psalm 13:3
Ask my wife what is one thing that I do not like and she will tell you it is when I cannot see where I am going. Many times she has tried to get me to ride theme park rides or go places at night, but I will often say no. It’s not that I am against going exploring or having fun, but I simply can’t see where I am going.
It’s challenging to see at night in some situations. I don’t see as well as I used to when I am driving at night. Road signs are harder to see. It’s harder to see when there is rain or fog at night. Darkness brings a whole new level of difficulty when it is put into the picture.
As I think about this, I think back on the words of David in Psalm 13. David was talking to God and He made two comments in this verse that really stand out to me. One is that he asked God to lighten his eyes. The second is that he made comments about the sleep of death. He is sharing with God that he is experiencing intense darkness and he needs to see light.
David was in a situation where he was unable to see his way. He didn’t know where he was going or what was happening around him. He prayed for God to enlighten his eyes with faith and strength to see beyond the troubles that he was facing. Have you ever been there? I sure have. Maybe the situations you are facing are not actual darkness, but rather dark times in your life spiritually. Perhaps you need God to enlighten your eyes to help you be able to see the way forward. Maybe you are worried you will not make it through like David.
Don’t give up because things look dark. It is in the dark times of life that God does extraordinary things. Trust in the Lord and let Him guide you through the darkness. When He does, you will see things like you’ve never seen them before.
