Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. — Isaiah 43:19

We can all be thankful for the things God has done in the past. Over the course of our lives, we have seen how God has protected, guided, and provided for our lives. In the good and the bad times, He has always been faithful.

Today, we stand at the door of a new year. The previous year is gone and the entire new year lies before us. We don’t know all that the new year will hold. We do not understand all the good times and the bad times, but we can be assured that the year will no doubt have many experiences for each of us.

While we have assurance for the new year based on what God has done in the past, the things that happen in the new year will bring about a time where we need something new from God. That is not that God does something new that he has never done before, but rather something fresh in our lives.

Each situation in our lives is different. Could you imagine if each situation He only gave us the same help as He did before? What if He only spoke to us with the same message as He did in our previous trial? It would be concerning and disappointing when we face those situations.

Isaiah shares a promise that when we are looking at the new situations of life, God will do a new thing. He will send something fresh. Something like a way in the wilderness or a refreshing river in the desert. Over the course of this year, we need that freshness from God for our lives.

So rather than making resolutions, promises, and laying out our plans, perhaps we should start the year asking God to provide the freshness that we will need from Him this year. He has promised if we look for His new thing, He will provide.

So as we find ourselves entering 2022, with all the unknowns that it holds, remember that God has promised He will send something fresh and new. With it, we will be able to handle all the unknowns of 2022.
