Paying for what you cannot afford

Paying for what you cannot afford

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. — 1 Peter 2:24

Back in 2010, our nation experienced one of the worst housing markets we had seen. There were numerous issues with mortgages and financial institutions that had lent money to people who could not afford it. It was not a situation that started in 2010, in fact, it had begun so many years before.

What had taken years to build up was evolving so quickly before everyone’s eyes. I remember the foreclosures, the bank failures, the government bailouts. It was quite a chaotic time. I quickly learned that you always want to be able to afford the things you buy. It’s common to want the best things, but you must be able to afford it.

The more I learn in life, the more I realize that the debt for my sins was something that I could not afford. I could try anything in my power, but it could not overcome the sin that I am guilty of. I am completely unable to overcome the debt of my sins on my own. That’s where Jesus comes into the picture!

He bare our sins on His own body on the cross at Calvary. He died for my sins that I might live unto righteousness. The verse says, by His stripes we were healed. I love it when I read that verse “healed” because it’s past tense. It means it’s an act that has been completed for the Christian. I do not have to worry because He took care of my sins once and for all!

So many people continue to try to do it in themselves, never realizing that Jesus has finished the payment for sin once and for all. Rather than suffering through the debt, He paid my debt for me so that I might enjoy life in Him. He paid the debt that I could not afford.
