For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. — Psalm 107:9

There are a lot of things in this life that we may crave from time to time. We see something and we believe we really need it. At that moment, we become so fixated on it that nothing will satisfy us but that thing which we are craving.

But there’s a difference between when I am craving something and when I am thirsty. For example, I may crave a piece of chocolate cake, but I can also say no and that craving will go away. When I am thirsty, it takes something to drink to satisfy that thirst.

The verse here in Psalm 107 where the word translated longing actually goes back to the concept of thirst. It is the idea that someone is so thirsty that they are eagerly seeking something to quench that thirst.

Imagine someone so thirsty that they become completely consumed with looking for water that they cannot do anything else. For a person that is eagerly looking for God, the psalmist says that God will satisfy that longing. The key is that the person must be looking!

When was the last time that you were so eager for God that nothing in this world could satisfy you? As the psalmist says, if you are eager for God, He will satisfy the desires of your heart. He wants more than someone with a craving, He wants someone that is thirsty for Him!
