Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. Proverbs 23:17 & 18
Equality is a term that seems to be very popular in our day. We often hear politicians talk about equality as they argue over public policy and events that happen across the country. We have seen a lot of events play out in communities across the country in the name of equality and inequality.
The idea behind the inequality argument is not really about equality, but rather one of envy and jealousy. Those who do not have want what others have. This is nothing new for the human race as we struggle with the desires of our flesh.
But for the Christian, we must remember that we should not envy those who are prosperous in this world. Proverbs tells us that we should instead focus on fearing the Lord all the day long. Why? Because worldly prosperity has an end.
In the future, those things which the world argued were worthwhile and meant so much, they will prove worthless. All the fortune and fame in the world only lasts a short time. Even Jesus taught in Mark 8:36, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
Rather than desiring to have the things of this world or to be like those who are popular in this world, our minds and thoughts should be on God. We should turn our focus on things that will last forever.
